That doesn't come anywhere close to describing how I feel today, of all days, the anniversary of one of the greatest ever victories for freedom and democracy.

Now we have to hope that on the one hand, the Europe in/out referendum doesn't completely dominate the next few years, and yet on the other, that the debate is sufficiently thorough to persuade the electorate not to pull out of Europe.

The same selfishness, protectionism and irrational fear of foreigners - even of our own brethren Scots - which characterises the Tory party, could do untold harm to our nation.

It's now up to every one of the disenfranchised and disillusioned voters to remember this feeling, channel our energies towards putting things right, and do our bit to help develop political awareness and social conscience among the younger generation who don't always take notice of politics and elections.

Democracy is one of the greatest things about our great country. Let's use it.
